What is conservative dentistry?

Probably, when you read about conservative dental treatment, comes to mind:

Conservative dental treatment = old, obsolete, traditional, bygone era treatment.

Is that so? So, you are reading this article at the right time, it is the perfect opportunity for you to know and explain the current, new and rewarding world of conservative dentistry.

In past decades, dentistry was very different: The equipment, chairs, turbines, the bur, the instruments and even the smell of dentistry evoked fear. Old dental treatments were aggressive, invasive of the natural dental enamel of the tooth to conform to the dental materials of that time and in most cases, the extraction of natural teeth was the first option for pain dental.

Imagine at that time, with dental sensitivity, which today is managed with toothpastes for sensitive teeth available in any pharmacy, in the past, the possibility that they proposed to remove "the sensitive tooth" to solve it definitive dental pain, was very high.

In a small cavity, cavities of great extension and depth were prepared, destroying natural enamel and healthy dentin to achieve retention and resistance of the dental material (amalgam, gold, ceramics).

If the teeth came out “mounted and crooked”, the treatment proposal was to extract one or more healthy teeth to gain space. In this way, little by little, more and more natural teeth were lost, vital parts for carrying out basic functions such as eating, speaking and laughing.

These “old, old, traditional” era treatments were NOT conservative treatments of the natural tooth. On the contrary, they were destructive and aggressive dental treatments that negatively influenced the smile, oral health, general and emotional health.

Currently, the influence of sustainability, preservation and conservation has changed the concept of this traditional dentistry. Today, the trend is the minimum extension, maximum preservation of the enamel, keeping the natural tooth in the mouth; imitate the natural (biomimetics); obtain oral health and physical and emotional well-being.

Now, do you understand what conservative dental treatment and conservative dentistry are?
